Like many of the systems in constant flux which surround us, music and
improvisation involve a high level of unpredictability. Those who
create music through improvisation must come to terms with the fact
that the elements under their control are in constant interaction with
a plethora of other factors over which they have no direct control
whatsoever.
Guitarist and composer Frank Martino knows this well, and for this
record he has taken a classic organ trio (the same format popularized
by guitarists like Wes Montgomery and Grant Green), and flung it into
the chaos of the 21st century. Martino performs on an 8-string guitar
and live electronics, joined by Claudio Vignali (in a nod to Delueze,
he is listed here as an organist despite only playing piano, Rhodes
and synths in this context) and Niccolo' Romanin on drums, electronic
drums and synths.
The recording was made without the use of overdubs, each musician
directly responsible for the gradual evolution of his individual sound
in real time. The result is a sense of freedom in the rapidly evolving
dialog in which acoustic and electronic elements constantly exchange
roles.
Martino's compositions share space with versions of a piece by
Canadian producer Venetian Snares and the iconic Waltz for Debby by
Bill Evans. The music feels corporeal, bodies speaking with a
multitude of voices, surprising and disorienting: an electric charge
rushing between the synapses which conduct the creative impulse,
subject to a whirlwind of influences constantly redirecting the path
of a shared musical idea.
To return to Delueze, a body without organs is a liberated and
desiring body. This seems to be the best place to start if you want to
push the music outside of the cramped, airless spaces created by our
expectations and preconceptions and let it catch fire when it meets
the ears of a curious listener.
